Francesco's Ways Tour

Sanctuary of Beata Angela, Foligno

The church of St Francis is located in the historic quarter of Foligno and has included the old church of San Matteo, now turned into a chapel.

Inside the church the remains of Beata Angela (Angela of Foligno) are venerated; this devotion dates back to 1701, when Pope Clemente XI officially approved it.

The site is also linked to the story of San Francis who, when he went to Foligno, apparently withdrew to pray in the old church of San Matteo. Beata Angela frequented this place before and after her conversion.

After she withdrew to Assisi and had several mystical experiences she started a high level of apostolic activity to help her fellow human beings, and above all her fellow citizens suffering from leprosy.

After the death of her husband and sons she dedicated herself completely to helping poor people and entered the Tertiary Franciscan Order.
